"Jeff Bell is a sweet, decent, well-adjusted guy," said Joss Whedon, "Angel" exec producer and co-creator. "Despite those shortcomings, he's the perfect guy to be running 'Angel' with me. He's stepped up in a big way, taking the helm at a crucial and creatively exciting season. His promotion is well earned, and he's gonna keep earning it until he begs for death."
Bell joined the "Angel" writing staff last year after a three-season run as a writer and producer on 20th's "The X-Files." While Whedon has tended to promote from within a small corps of writers with whom he's worked before, Bell has moved up quickly at Whedon's Mutant Enemy Prods.
"Joss has very specific tastes that I still struggle to understand," Bell admitted. "But I think I've proven that I really love the show and understand it well enough to carry the mantle he has set up."
CAA-repped Bell said the wide range of tones that exist within a single Whedon creation have proven to be invigorating when it comes to developing story ideas.
"It's a romantic comedy one week, a suspenseful drama the next and a horror show another week," he said. "Something horrible happens at just the wrong moment, and something wonderful happens when you least expect it. That's why I like working for Joss."
