The Buffyverse: a Symposium on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Thursday 21st November, 9:30am 6pm.
Registration Fees: Students ~ $12 / Full Fee ~ $25 (Snacks, coffee,
tea, & biscuits will be provided)
This day symposium will offer a variety of perspectives on the Buffy the
Vampire Slayer Universe. Academics, fans and general public all welcome!
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Catherine Driscoll, Lecturer in Critical Theory &
Cultural Studies, Department of English, Adelaide University. Dr. Catherine
Driscoll is the author of Girls: Feminine Adolescence in Popular Culture
and Culture Theory (Columbia University Press, 2002) and the forthcoming
book on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Columbia University Press).
Panels Speakers: Dr. Matthew Sharpe (on the vampyre mytheme and its
application in Buffy), Peter Mattessi (Sarah Michelle Gellar as a new type
of star icon for the teen generation), Gwyn Symonds (the representation of
evil, violence and redemption in the Buffyverse with focus on Spike and
Spike fans), Christian McCrea (the implications of fashion trends,
archetypes and star images in Buffy and Angel), Dr. Jennifer Dowling (Buffy
and Angel and the construction of vampires and demons as evolving heroes
who erase cultural and ethnic heterogeneity), Linda Rust (fans, fan fiction
and their influence on the direction of Buffy, Saige Walton (the use and
misuse of magic, and the emergence of parallel universes), Edwina Bartlem
(magic, witchcraft and the narrative of lesbianism and coming out in
Buffy), Dr. Scott Knight (the narrative and stylistic characteristics of
the Buffy the Vampire Slayer video game for the Microsoft X-Box), Dr. Wendy
Haslem (the 'Ted' episode as a reworking of one of the most violent fairy
tales ever told: Charles Perrault's Bluebeard), Dr. Sue Turnbull (the Buffy
story arcs that depend on characters and their relationships being in a
constant state of flux), Leonie Cooper (Sunnydale as the site of struggle
between Buffy-space and monster-space, and furniture as metaphor and tool
for navigating the spaces of the Buffyverse), Katy Stevens (on the
manipulation of sound objects and the speech-act in the episodes "Hush" and
"The Body"), Janelle Tassone (Buffy as Valley girl icon who adopts the
tropes of the strong heroine familiar to horror cinema), Diana Sandars (the
genre hybrid sci-fi/fantasy/musical episode "Once More with Feeling".
A detailed program will be available on the day.

on the day will be between 8.30am-9.30am, Prince Philip Theatre Foyer,
Architecture Building, University of Melbourne. However, we can not
