Anyanka was inevitably drawn to Sunnydale by the cry of Cordelia Chase. Cordelia had just witness her boyfriend, Xander, kissing his long time best friend Willow Rosenberg. Anyanka let Cordelia hold her wish-granting amulet and without realizing the consequences Cordelia wished that Buffy (whom she blamed for all her problems) had never come to Sunnydale.

The wish that Cordelia made enabled Anyanka to create and altered reality. Sunnydale had been turned into a dark place where vampires ruled the night, amongst the vampires included were the vamp versions of Xander and Willow. This new Sunnydale meant that no human would go out after dusk as the reality was come sunrise they would never be seen again. The Master was back and was running this vampire kingdom and had created a machine that would drain the blood from humans. In this altered reality Willow kept Angel as a pet, torturing him at her leisure, and her and Xander were the Masters pride and joy.

Cordelia soon knew what Anyanka had done and how Sunnydale had changed, but having tried to explain to Giles and his vampire hunters she was killed by Vamp Willow and Xander. However her words nad the amulet which she still had inspired Giles to research Anyanka. After doing so he realized that what Cordelia had said may well be true, and by destroying the amulet reality could once again be restored. Giles smashed the amulet and everything was returned to normal, however this was not before Oz staked the Vampire version of Willow and Buffy was killed by the Master.

Yet one thing would change in the restored reality. Anyanka lost all her demonic powers and pleaded to D'Hofferyn to restore them to her. Anyanka pleaded with him to create a fold in time so that she could change the events that took place. D'Hofferyn wouldn't do so saying that her time had passed.

For a thousand years I wielded the power of the wish. I brought ruin upon the heads of unfaithful men; I offered destruction and chaos for the pleasure of the lower beings. I was feared and worshipped across the mortal globe and dow I'm stuck at Sunnydale High. A mortal! A child! And I'm flunking math." - Anyanka, in DOPPELGANGLAND

Anyanka shortened her name to Anya and continued to go to Sunnydale High where she went to Willow and asked her for help to create the fold in time in order to retrieve something very special to her. Willow unaware of Anya's true self agreed to help.

However the spell failed. They were unable to retrieve Anya's amulet before it was destroyed, however the vampiric version of Willow was drawn into the true reality, however they found a way to send her back. After all this had failed Anya the 1120 year old girl came to terms with being a girl again, subject to raging hormones, and being unable to order a drink at the bar.

Anya found it hard to cope with these new changes but more so the strong attraction she had to Xander as the relationship between females and males disturbed her deeply. Yet she found enough courage in her to ask Xander to the prom to which he agreed.

Anya became one of the group and offered valuable insight into what would happen at the Acension. As she is the only living person ever to see one and survive. However she was not going to stick around to watch it as the last one she saw destroyed a whole city and it took a volcano to destroy the pure demon. So she fled, but that was not the last we would see from her.
