Spike (aka William the Bloody) was sired by Drusilla who inturn was sired by Angel. Drusilla hand picked the young Englishman who loved to write poetry and in this way became her partner, just like Darla and Angelus. William the Bloody was soon to be known as Spike due to the fact that he loved to torture people with rail-road spikes. In his travels Spike has killed two slayers. The first one was in China during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The second one was in New York on a subway train.
As soon as Spike hit Sunnydale he made his presence felt immediately driving into the "Welcome to Sunnydale" sign on the way into town. He along with Drusilla quickly took charge of what was left of the Order of Aurelius after the Masters death. The Order was led by The Anointed One however he was not much good as a leader and in frustration of not being able to kill Buffy, Spike killed "The Annoying One" by cageing him and exposing him to direct sunlight.
From now on we're gonna have a little less ritual and a little more fun around here." - Spike in "SCHOOL HARD"
Upon another attempt to kill Buffy, Spike was left a cripple after trying to restore Drusilla's health. This event had hard consequences on Spike as he soon suffered a severe case of depression as he could no longer be active in destroying the Slayer.
Yet when Angel's soul was once again taken away from him reverting him to Angelus, Spike had to act fast. As Angelus returned to them to help kill Buffy, Spike could see Drusilla slipping away from him and into the arms of Angelus as the two began to constanly flirt. Spike schemingly did not tell Drusilla or Angelus that he had regained use of his legs after being stuck in a wheel chair and led them to believe that he was still a cripple. To put an end to the flirtation between Angelus and Drusilla, Spike hitched up a scheme with Buffy to stop Angelus if he could escape with Drusilla nad never be seen again.
"Truth is, I like this world. You got dog racing, Manchester United, Love Boat, and you got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. A real passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Good-bye Picadilly, farewell Leicester bloody Square, you see what I'm saying" - Spike on what he likes in this world, and why he is going to help Buffy in "BECOMING PART 2"
THe promise that Spike made with Buffy would soon however be broken. A drunken Spike would return back to Sunnydale, heartbroken at the fact that Drusilla had been cheating on him with a chaos demon. Spike then attempted to force Willow to create a love spell that would bring Drusilla back to him. Yet his plan, as usual failed however he soon realized that the only way to get Drusilla back was to return to his old killing ways, to become the Old Spike again. But this search also failed as when Spike had found Drusilla he caught her in the arms of another demon - this time a Fungus Demon.
So Spike once again returned back to Sunnydale and picked up a new girlfriend - Harmony Kendall. Harmony was a former friend and classmate of Cordelia's who had been turned into a vampire during the Mayors Acension. But Spike's return to Sunnydale had nothing to do with Harmony but all to do with recovering the Gem of Amarra. The vampire who wore the gem would be invulnerable to harm, meaning no stake, decaptitation, sunlight could kill the wearer. However Buffy was able to get the ring back off Spike and sent it to Angel who was residing in L.A as a present. Spike followed the ring there, yet could not get it back off Angel who destroyed it to make sure it never fell into the wrong hands.
As bad as Spike felt at never being bale to kill Buffy he felt even worse when he was captured by the Initiative, who consequently put a chip in his head to make sure that he could never kill another human being. Spike managed to escape from the Initiative yet found it impossible to cope with the neural inhibitor that caused him so much pain when he tried to feed or even punch a human being.
So Spike eventually found himself relying on the "Scooby Gang" who would protect him in return for as much informaiton on the Initiative as they could get. While helping out the gang Spike learnt that he may not be able to hurt humans but he could fight and kill demons with no headaches occurring. Spike loved violence and if this was the only way he could take part in it he would - even if it was against his own kind.
Spike would however go behind the back of the people who had been protecting him and go and allie himself with the hybrid demon Adam, after Adam promised him he would remove his chip if he did so. As Adam requested Spike succeeded in bruising the feelings and egos of the Scooby Gang to ensure that the Slayer would be alone with no friends to help her. The gang however figured out what Spike was doing and had enough strength in them to combine together and merge all their life energies into Buffy who would consequently be able to destroy Adam. Thus Spike was never able to get his chip removed from his brain. Despite Spikes betrayal of the gang, Spike continues to help out the Gang in fighting the demons.
