"Is
there anything better thatn a natural disaster? The panic, the people lost in
the streets, like picking fruit off the vine." - Darla in "ANGEL"
Darla first appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the first scene
of the first episode in the first season. Darla was sired by the Master and
was serving him in the Masters Court. She was reffered to as the Masters favourite.
Darla displays a kind of sweetness which is unprecedented in any other vampire.
However more importantly Darla was Angel's sire. During the 18th Century Darla
turned a 27 year old Irish man called Liam into a vampire. Liam was then named
Angelus because when he knocked on his front door to kill his family who had
been to his funeral, his sister thought he had returned to her as an Angel.
It is also said that he was named Angel because he had an angelic face.
Darla and Angel successfully wrecked havoc all through Europe for many years
until the day came when Angels soul would be restored for which Darla was partially
esponsible for. She had captrued a Gypsies daughter to give to Angel as a present.
The gypsies then cast a spell on Angel and returned him his soul. As a result
of this Darla could no longer be with Angel and kicked him out of their house.
Time past however the two could not live apart for any longer and Angel begged
Darla to take him back. Angel's desperation was so great that he attempted to
live like an ordinary vampire even with a soul - just for Darla. So the two
were back together, but it would not stay this way. Darla started getting suspicious
that even though Angel said he was back he wasn't quite the vampire he used
to be, so she gave him a test. She brought him a baby to feed upon, if he fed
off it he could stay with her otherwise Angel would have to leave. Angel, with
his soul, could not bring himself to kill such an innocent being and left Darla.
There paths however would cross again, in Sunnydale when Angel is helping
Buffy and Darla helping the Master, now they are both fighting on opposite teams.
Darla continues to have a manipulative influence over Angel using his guilt
to try to get him to come back to her. However Darla confronts Buffy in a fight
to the death with guns ablazing, Angel steps in and stakes his long time lover
in the heart. The despair that this causes Darla in her last seconds is traumatic
as you can she it in her dusty face the shock that Angel could do this to her.
Yet this is not the end of Darla. She continues to haunt Angel in dreams even
when Angel has left Buffy and is fighting in L.A. Angel gets constant flashbacks
to the times that he had with Darla and the fun that they had. This in someway
was a premonition of what would later happen when Wolfram and Hart successfully
raise Darla from the firey depths of hell and back into the real world, as a
real human. There is no doubt that Darla will continue to manipulate and haunt
Angel for a long time yet.
